Excerpt:

Melissa’s eyes were on the view ahead instead of the trail and she missed seeing the animal standing in her path. A sudden blur was her only warning before she fell into the dirt, her arm securely gripped in the mouth of a large, tan cougar. She screamed, and for the briefest moment, its grip slackened before it dug it’s teeth even deeper into her flesh. With her free hand she hit the creature in the ribs, and it snarled and shook her arm, ripping it even more. She scrabbled her hand over the dusty ground and her fingers curled around the smooth bark of a stick. Heaving it into the air, she swung at the creature, catching it on the ribs. The cat loosened its grip, and she pulled her arm away and scrambled backward before pushing herself hurriedly to her feet. Her skin was ripped and bloody, but she barely noticed as she grabbed the branch again and swung it through the air in the direction of the cougar. It snarled and darted away from the crude weapon, its olive-green eyes watching her intently, and Melissa gripped the branch more tightly.

A crashing sound came from the trees, and then, suddenly, a flash of black rushed through the air, slamming into the cougar and sending it flying. She stumbled back as a huge black cat, bigger by far than the cougar, fought her attacker. Her mouth went dry as she realized it was a panther – just like the one from her dreams. Tan and black blurred together as snarls and growls ripped through the air. Blood spurted over the dirt; the cougar yelped but met the panther with bared teeth. The black cat didn’t even pause as it lunged for the cougar’s throat, ripping open the side of its neck. The cougar stumbled to the ground, then rose and fled.

The panther watched as the cougar disappeared between the trees, then slowly turned its bright green gaze on Melissa. She stared back, frozen with fear, as the creature looked at her. It glanced at her arm, bloody and dirty, and she stepped backward, holding the injured limb to her chest as she gripped the stick. The cat followed her movement, then with a flick of its tail turned and vanished through the trees.

DANNY:

Turning carefully as the sunlight filtered through my bedroom window, I propped up on my elbow and reached out to brush a wayward blond hair behind her ear. My heart ached deep in my chest that she’d grow up without her momma. My sister’s little girl was now mine, and she’d be raised as my own as best I could. Being a single father for the last few years had forced me to grow the fuck up in certain areas, at least all areas other than women. It’s not like I could imagine a woman coming into my life and helping me raise Lyndsay.

“That tickles!” Her little voice surprised me. Big blue eyes looked up at me with an innocence in them that I knew I’d do anything to protect.

“What tickles?” I lifted an eyebrow and reached over to tickle the side of her neck. “This?” Her giggles filled up the air as I reached for her.

“No, Daddy! No!” She swatted at me and rolled off the bed, hitting the floor.

“Hey. You okay?” I moved quickly, ready to scoop her up.

She smiled up at me from the floor. “Yes!” Bounding up, she tickled my neck and ran off toward the living room, her blond curls flying behind her.

“You tricker!” I yelled playfully from the bedroom and got up. I ran my fingers through my hair and walked down the hallway to the kitchen. It was hard to believe Jannie had been gone for five years. Seemed like yesterday she was giving me shit about finding a good woman in my life. Too bad she never found a good man.

“What are you thinking about?” Lyndsay tilted her head to the side as she sat up at the breakfast bar, her little chin propped up in her hands. “You look worried.”

“Nope. Just trying to wake up. I went to sleep with a princess next to me and woke up to a frog.” I pinched the tip of her nose softly. “What happened?”

“A frog! Not me, Daddy.” She pulled back, shaking her head.

“No. You’re right. You’re much too pretty for that.” I walked to the fridge. “What does my girl want for breakfast this morning?”

“Pancakes, and eggs and maybe some bacon. Oh! And some sausage. And that ham we like so much, daddy. The really salty one.”

I laughed and glanced over at her. “Cinnamon rolls it is.”

She huffed and rolled her eyes. “Fine. I’m going to watch cartoons. Are we going to Mimi’s again today?”

“Yeah, baby. You know it’s baseball season right now. I have to be there when they tell me to.”

“I hate baseball season.” She walked toward the living room with her shoulders rolled in. I needed to find a damn day off to spend with her. The cute little thing had no clue that I was her uncle instead of her father. She didn’t need to know. That was the decision mom, dad and I made the day we buried my sister. It was better this way, and I was old enough and wealthy enough to take Lyndsay.

“Not that I could do it without you,” I mumbled to the empty air around me. My mom and dad had been more than helpful, and between the three of us, Lyndsay was growing up to be a bright, happy, healthy little girl.

“Dad!” she yelled from the living room.

“Yeah?” I pressed the button on the stove and walked to the edge of the kitchen.

“When are you going to bring home someone that can do my hair right?”

I put my hand on my hip and gave her a funny look. “Are you saying I’m not a good beauty shop lady or something?”

She giggle-snorted, the sound of it warming my soul. “Dad. We need a girl around here.”

“Well, we have one.” I pointed to her. “You!”

Excerpt:

“How would you bring in new business, though?”

I’m amazed that he seems to find our conversation interesting. He’s an audience willing to listen and I’ve not had that in a long time. Damn this crush of mine. It won’t be easy to tame after tonight.

“New menu items, specials, things like that. Start serving dessert, like pies. Easy cook items. With the new burgers I’ve created and a new décor, I’d open in the summer when the air is fresh and everyone is happy to be out of the snow, hungry for grilled food. I think we could do fine.”

“What’s your hold up?”

“Tony, Dad. It’s complicated.” I shrug. His arm feels good, and I have the overwhelming urge to nuzzle against it. “Did you kiss Amy Parker when you were twelve? She still brags about it.” Did I just ask him about kissing? What is wrong with me? Will this mouth of mine never shut up? Stop it, Stop it, stop it!

“That I did, in a closet over at Robert Anderson’s house.”

“Ew.”

“I was twelve and desperate. You can’t blame me. I do blame that stupid soda bottle. And your first kiss?” There is a challenge in his voice.

“Kevin Monroe at the Klines Movie Theater. He sent me a six-page note the next day about how much he loved me, and I freaked out and dumped him.”

“Any regrets?”

I choke back a giggle. “Naw, ‘cept I remember I liked his cologne. It could have been aftershave, but it was nice.” It’s not half as nice as the Aramis that Patrick has on. Something about it sends a shiver up my spine that has nothing to do with the zombie waiting in Dad’s office.

“The dark isn’t so bad, now is it?”

“I guess not.”

Silence surrounds us. The fear that enveloped me seems to disappear.

“Are you seeing anyone?”

“No.” It sounds terrible now that I’ve said it out loud. Like I’m admitting to being a desperate and dateless leper.

“So,” he drawls out, “ever thought of dating a military guy?” He squeezes my fingers.

Is he serious?

His fingertip smooths over the rough callouses I’ve gained from years of hard work. Suddenly my wasted evening of not going out to celebrate is starting to look better. “I think it would depend on which military guy.”

“You’re killing me. You know that, don’t you?” His strangled tone only sets off a case of the giggles.

“Are you asking me out, Patrick?”

“Trying to, but you’re not making it easy.” The challenge is back in his voice.

“I wouldn’t mind a date or two,” I manage to squeak out. Breathe, Harper, just breathe, calmly through your nose, out your mouth. Sainted Mother of God, Patrick asked me out! I hit the jackpot! Now all I have to do is not hit him.

The Other Woman - Teaser 1

Excerpt:

Meet Rival and Scarlett. They used to be best friends, until Scarlett stole Rival’s husband. But unlike most wives, Rival refuses to turn the other cheek.

RIVAL MURDOCH (The Wife) Not only did Scarlett steal my husband, she also helped herself to my children, my friends and shattered all my dreams. She just fell into the life I took years to build, and is blissfully happy, while I have to start my life all over again. How can I not be angry and bitter?

These woman who steal husbands, destroy families and shatter dreams, why isn’t society doing something about it? Why are we allowing them to get away with it?

People say, “Move on. Living well is the best revenge.”

I don’t agree. I want revenge. It’s all I can think about.

SCARLETT SMYTH (The Mistress) If Rival didn’t want to lose Bradley to me, she should have tried harder to be a better wife. She could have started off by losing weight. I mean, she was married to a handsome and charismatic man who was going to be Australia’s next Prime Minister, and she was a size twelve! Twelve. That’s a whopping size forty-two in Italy and a giant eight in the U.S.! A body for a Dove commercial.

How dare she? How dare she have the arrogance to value bread and pasta and rice and noodles and potatoes and chocolate mousse over someone like Bradley Murdoch?

I mean, look at Posh – she’s a size zero. Why? Because she appreciates David. She does not in any way jeopardize her position as Almost Royalty.

And Angelina, clearly she forgoes carbs because those hip bones, they could put out Brad’s eyes, let me tell you. These women, they sacrifice to keep their men, to keep away predators like me and that’s how it ought to be.

I’m a size six, by the way. That would make me a four in the U.S., a five in Japan, a two in Canada, a four in the UK and a mere thirty-two in Italy, making me an extra-small, everywhere in the world, get it? It’s important that you do, because I work hard at my centerfold figure and I do believe I deserve recognition for it.

goodreads-badge-add-plus-fad3b68d35050280ea55d50f17c654b5

Excerpt:

The high-pitched choir of songbirds echoed through the forest as Oak and Hart settled on a rug, late in the afternoon. The two of them had found a clearing at the side of the forest that was near enough to the tress to offer shade, but also close to the water where they’d been fishing. They’d no sooner sat down than Hart spotted something on the other side of the riverbank moving in the grass.

“Shh…I just saw something. I think it’s an otter.” Hart absentmindedly put a hand on Oak’s lap to still him. He didn’t know which was more exciting, seeing the otters, or the burning hot palm that touched his thigh. Oak sat rigidly, glancing between the handsome cowboy’s hand and the otter family bounding along through the grass bank.

“Aren’t you going to get your camera?” Hart chivvied him along.

“Oh…yes.” Oak moved slowly, reaching for the black bag and pulling the camera out. He attached the lens calmly and crawled down the small decline toward the stony bank. He beckoned Hart to join him then focused the lens on the otters. He could hear his companion creeping through the grass behind him. Belly down on the mud, Oak steadied the camera as Hart came alongside him, and let out a sigh as he sank down next to Oak to watch.

The female had two pups with her. As their svelte bodies wound through the rocks to the water’s edge, the mother otter glided into the river without so much as a splash, and the two pups followed. Oak lost count of the photos he took, possibly hundreds of shots as they paddled through the murky depths cautiously. Their fur shiny and dark from absorbing water, making their frames sleeker as they gracefully bathed against the flow.

“Can you hear them?” Hart said with a smile that sprang from his lips right through to his big gray eyes.

“Yeah…” Oak whispered.

The otters called to one another with endearing high-pitched squeaks.

“You ever seen them hold hands?” Hart asked, his lips so close to Oak’s ear that he could feel Hart’s breath tickling the skin.

“No, but I’d love to get a picture of it.”

After about fifteen minutes of lying in the grass like a predator, Oak’s pointed his lens to follow the family towards some big flat stones that were warm from the sun. The otters rested on the smooth surface, shaking their fur, and squeaking to each other until eventually all three disappeared through the long grasses.

“Hart.” Oak turned to face his companion on the ground.

“Yes?”

“I just realized I’m getting damp down here,” Oak said, letting out a snort.

“Me too…” A wicked smile came to his dark pink lips that spread out with luscious fullness as he broke into a chuckle.

At that moment elation filled Oak Watching the beautiful man was always a pleasure. The river tickled over rocks, murmuring quietly, and Hart’s lips were so close to Oak’s that he could feel each breath on his skin. Moving closer, Hart’s mouth brushed Oak’s so slightly, that Oak wasn’t even sure they’d actually touched.

With closed eyes, Oak parted his mouth willing the man’s tongue inside. Soft, plump lips pressed against his sending a shudder through his spine. His breath hitched with anticipation. A chaste kiss ended with Hart pulling away and shaking his head.

“You and your wildlife photography are leading me astray, young Mr. Redman.”

“Sorry…” Heat rushed up to Oak’s neck and face. He couldn’t understand why he was blushing. The soft, innocent kiss had been simple enough, but the highly-strung emotions behind it made him hot with every need possible. All of his senses were raw, responsive to the man’s presence. What would Hart’s muscles feel like under the man’s touch? Warm, golden skin would rub easily against his, and the comforting, arousing scent of pine would enhance each sensation further.

Hart stood; the blue T-shirt had ridden upward, exposing his flat stomach and hard abs. He tugged the material down, covering the dark treasure trail leading to his cargo pants, and dusted himself off, shedding grass from his top. Oak stared, then realized he should roll his tongue back in and get to his feet. He followed Hart back to the blanket, and flicked through some of the shots he’d taken of the otters.

“You want a look?”

“Sure.” Hart put hand out and took the camera instead of coming close to Oak but being three feet away still made his skin tingle with expectation. An expectation that would go unfulfilled.
