Excerpt:

I must have been feeling weak, because instead of rushing out to confront a few of those I wanted to talk to, I invited DeMarco in. He’d left Braden in charge of the scene and didn’t appear to be in a rush to start the reports he’d have to do. That thought made me smile. For once I wasn’t chained to a desk for seventy-five percent of the investigation. I could get used to being out of the Army and doing things my own way.

“Glad to see the smile. I know this has been extremely hard on you,” DeMarco said. “Want to share?”

“I was thinking about Jillie, wanting me to come home. She kept trying to talk me into the leaving the military. It took her death to accomplish that.” Hot, wet tears started streaming down my face. Appalled, I turned away from DeMarco and stumbled toward the bedroom. He didn’t say anything or try to stop me, but he did follow me. When I didn’t collapse on the bed, he put his arms around me, gave a gently hug and helped me to sit on the mattress.

Damn. This was awkward. The harder I tried to stop crying, the more I leaked tears. I don’t cry. I don’t show emotion, especially to guys. I didn’t want to feel the warmth of his touch and long to put my head on his shoulder. But I did. Before I knew what was happening his lips were on mine and I was holding him. Desperate to keep from drowning.

He pushed back, looking into my eyes. Reading me like the clichéd open book.

Excerpt:

Conference rooms are all the same. As are airports. On a cold, wet, mid-November afternoon, His Grace, the Eighteenth Duke of Burnham, decided that those who thought running the Burnham Trust was a glamorous job should go from London to Paris to Brussels to New York seeing only conference rooms and airports. He was now trapped in one of the beastly things on the twenty-eighth floor of the Manhattan offices of Craig, Lewis, and Weller, studying the deepening early twilight through the sheets of glass that formed the walls. His mood was as black as the coming night.

He looked down the nine-foot glossy mahogany conference table and wondered why it took five lawyers to sell a house to a girls’ school. And why weren’t any of them the one he wanted to see? His operative had named Taylor Collins, a partner in the Craig, Lewis real estate section, as was the one likely to know where Diana’s tape was. He bet she looked at least forty-five and was twenty pounds overweight. And probably chain smoked and had a face like a bulldog. He didn’t look forward to dealing with her.

The massive, dark mahogany door to the conference room opened, and another female suit stepped inside. A pair of eyes the color of spring violets were fixed on him. Very like Diana’s eyes, but deeper.

“My partner, Taylor Collins, Your Grace.”

His heart was racing so fast, he had difficulty speaking; so he merely nodded in response.   He wondered what color La Perlas she was wearing, but he longed for more than sex. He desperately craved the impossible: time alone and the chance to know who she was beneath the lawyer facade.

My Review: 3.5/5 Stars

This is the first book that I have read that in 2010 there was a Duke of anything. That is so cool.

Nicholas has lost every woman in his life who he has cared about to a tragic death. He only has love interest because it would look weird if he didn’t.

Taylor is assigned to sale the Abby where Nicholas lives. As she looks for the right paperwork, she finds a journal from Nicholas’ ancestor. As she reads it and gets to know Nicholas she realized they were a lot alike when it came to the women they loved.

But will Taylor change the course of history.

Ok so I was really enjoying this book. It had a bit of mystery, no sex, but it eluded to it. Now I have said this before I have a dirty mind, but I got over it. The story is engaging and you want to know what will happen next. What made me mad was towards the end when they were trying to frame Nicholas and Taylor became wishy washy when it came to his innocence.

Don’t form a bond and when that bond is tested you start to doubt. Though she did redeem herself at the end, that part stuck out the most with me. You have to pay attention to the book or you will be surprised when you find out who is causing all the trouble.

Great read.

My Review: 4/5 Stars

This story takes place in two time periods. One in 2005 where Jake Bernstein’s is recruited to investigate Nazi war criminals and in 1941 where we follow Mary Snider and her secret life.

While undercover Jake starts a romance with Meg, Mary’s granddaughter. Because his feeling are growing for Meg, he is putting the case and his career in jeopardy. When it comes to Meg and her grandmother, he becomes protective of them.

Meg knows nothing from her grandmother’s past and when the truth starts to come to light she doesn’t want to believe it.

This story catches you and doesn’t let you go until you finish the book. It was well rounded and written. You felt where the characters were coming from, felt their happiness and pain. The twist and turns and bumpy ride will have you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. I am especially happy that I got to read the next book right after, so I can know what will happen next.

Insight:

The Heroes in LIES IN WAIT: BOOK 2, A Jake Bernstein FBI Thriller

The sequel to my espionage thriller, A BODYGUARD OF LIES, is called LIES IN WAIT. My hero, FBI agent Jake Bernstein, goes deep undercover to stop and capture a Muslim terrorist cell in Silicon Valley. In doing so, he not only risks his new relationship with Meg Larsen (from A Bodyguard of Lies), but his life as well. Thousands of lives are at stake, however, and Jake’s devotion to duty trumps everything else. When, in order to be admitted into the terrorist cell’s inner circle and discover the details of their plot, he must do the unthinkable, Jake faces a shocking and heart-wrenching choice, one that shakes his very core of values and makes him question his choice of career.

Here are the most frequently asked questions about the characters I create:

Is there anything specific you did when creating your main characters that you knew would immediately give readers a sense of who they are?

I look around me and choose traits from various people I know and admire. Jake Bernstein is a composite character, a blend of the most important and admirable qualities a man can have. He’s great! A strong, wonderful man! A former Navy SEAL with a mixed German-Jewish and Irish-Catholic background, he has a strong sense of duty to his country and his family’s heritage. Also, he is protective towards civilians and is mindful of their vulnerabilities when on the job. However, he’s human and carries with him the guilt of a failed marriage and a sense of hopelessness about ever living a normal life, with a wife, children, a regular job. As an FBI undercover specialist, he has foreign language talents that few others have and is fluent in Hebrew, German and Arabic. Because of his dark good looks, he can blend in among a variety of ethnic groups. Jake has a sarcastic sense of humor that belies his deep humanistic faith. I hope I do him the justice he deserves.

Choosing Meg Larsen’s traits was both easy and difficult. Of course, she’s blond and beautiful, loves to jog and swim like Jake, and is fluent in several foreign languages. But I wanted her to represent a professional civilian occupation, and so she is a high school foreign-language teacher. Abandoned by her parents and raised by a grandmother, who was loving but mysterious, and a strict but dedicated military grandfather, Meg has grown up with her own personal baggage. What Jake reveals to her in A BODYGUARD OF LIES sends her reeling emotionally, rocking her very foundation. But, like her grandparents, Meg is strong and resilient, which she proves in LIES IN WAIT. I like her very much! I think she’s the best a young woman can be.

How do you follow a favorite character into a series? When I find a character that I really admire and love, I think writing a series with that character is a lot of fun. The Jake Bernstein FBI mystery-thriller series was an idea that just sprang up at the end of A Bodyguard of Lies. Jake and Meg were such compelling characters, I had to explore them further and take them on several journeys. I needed to test Jake’s integrity and devotion to duty, which is what the plot of LIES IN WAIT does. And, of course, Meg’s strength is tested in ways that are perhaps shocking.

How much research do you encounter with writing thrillers? I read, read, read and take notes like crazy. Then I do “boots on the ground” research. That’s the fun part. For LIES IN WAIT, I spent months researching Islam, the religion and political ideology. My cousin and I went “undercover” in one of the largest mosques in California, the same one that has given money to Al Qaeda in the past and which was once investigated by the FBI. What I discovered about Islam in America was shocking and deeply disturbing.

My Review: 4/5 Stars

Jake Bernstein is back and he is undercover again. This time though he is an undercover Muslim, trying to stop terrorist acts. Meg has moved back to the states and has decided to go back to school.

While deeply under cover, Jake risks everything to go see her. What he doesn’t know is that he is followed. And the people he is investigating believes that he has strayed from the cause. They give him a task and it is to do the unthinkable. Will he go through with it or will he risk the lives of millions of people?

Like the first book this one was fast paced and actioned packed. It kept you guessing, anting more. Jake is good at what he does, and will stop at nothing to bring justice where it is needed. Meg I felt she had more back bone in this story. She didn’t take crap sitting down and she tried to put the things that her grandmother taught her, when she was in a bad situation.

All in all I liked the series and wouldn’t mind seeing more of Jake and Meg.

Rack & Ruin by Charlie Cochet

Rack & Ruin (THIRDS #3)

Genre: M/M, Sci-Fi, Mystery/Suspense

Synopsis:

New York City’s streets are more dangerous than ever with the leaderless Order of Adrasteia and the Ikelos Coalition, a newly immerged Therian group, at war. Innocent civilians are caught in the crossfire and although the THIRDS round up more and more members of the Order in the hopes of keeping the volatile group from reorganizing, the members of the Coalition continue to escape and wreak havoc in the name of vigilante justice.

Worse yet, someone inside the THIRDS has been feeding the Coalition information. It’s up to Destructive Delta to draw out the mole and put an end to the war before anyone else gets hurt. But to get the job done, the team will have to work through the aftereffects of the Therian Youth Center bombing. A skirmish with Coalition members leads Agent Dexter J. Daley to a shocking discovery and suddenly it becomes clear that the random violence isn’t so random. There’s more going on than Dex and Sloane originally believed, and their fiery partnership is put to the test. As the case takes an explosive turn, Dex and Sloane are in danger of losing more than their relationship.

goodreads-badge-add-plus-fad3b68d35050280ea55d50f17c654b5

My Review: 5/5 Stars

There is some iffy stuff going down in Thirds. There’s a mole in the unit and Destructive Delta is trying to catch one of the Coalition members so they can get answers to their questions. Besides all that there is something seriously wrong with Ash, way more than his normal pain in the butt self. When you find out who the mole is and you are like me, your first thought will be WTF just happened.

OMG I love Dex. I know I have said that before, but it will remain true. His sense of humor is something to live by, but don’t get me wrong when you make him mad, you better look out. The chemistry between Dex and Sloan is heating up and boy how I wish I was either one of them.

We have the bad guys that you just want to catch and torture yourself so you know what is going to happen next. The lead MC’s are just awesome in their own right, but if Sloan runs away from what he has with Dex one more time, we are going to have some words. You just can’t keep putting Dex through this crap man. The supporting characters are amazing. I really hope she gives Cael his own story. And the ending, hot dang I wish she would have kept writing. I can’t wait for the next book in this series and get some more Dex in my life! I’m a little sad though because I have to wait until Feb for the next book. I started going through withdrawal at the end of this book. I don’t think I can wait that long.

Blood & Thunder (THIRDS #2)

Genre: M/M, Sci-Fi, Mystery/Suspense

Synopsis:

When a series of bombs go off in a Therian youth center, injuring members of THIRDS Team Destructive Delta, and causing a rift between agents Dexter J. Daley and Sloane Brodie, peace seems unattainable. Especially when a new and frightening group, the Order of Adrasteia, appears to always be a step ahead. With panic and intolerance spreading and streets becoming littered with the Order’s propaganda, hostility between Humans and Therians grows daily. Dex and Sloane, along with the rest of the team, are determined to take down the Order and restore peace, not to mention settle a personal score. But the deeper the team investigates the bombings, the more they believe there’s a more sinister motive than a desire to shed blood and spread chaos.

Discovering the frightful truth behind the Order’s intent forces Sloane to confront secrets from a past he thought he’d left behind for good, a past that could not only destroy him and his career, but also the reputation of the organization that made him all he is today. Now more than ever, Dex and Sloane need each other, and, along with trust, the strength of their bond will mean the difference between justice and all-out war.

goodreads-badge-add-plus-fad3b68d35050280ea55d50f17c654b5

My Review: 5/5 Stars

This book was just awesome. And if you thought Dex was funny in the last back, he amps up his charm in this book. You gotta love a man who enjoys singing karaoke. Though everything is not peachy keen with Destructive Delta, they are doing everything they can to stop Isaac.

There are problems between Dex and Sloan, but what do you expect when Sloan won’t open up to him. A relationship is a two way street and Sloan can’t expect Dex to keep taking him back when he runs away from what they have. The question is will Sloan get his head out of his butt before he loses Dex for good?

While reading this book, my daughter told me books can’t be that funny, that’s how much I was laughing when it came to Dex. Little does she know if you find just the right book and the author is dead on with the humor, you will crack up at every funny part.

Love this series!

Hell & High Water by Charlie Cochet

 22267616

Hell & High Water (THIRDS #1)

Genre: M/M, Sci-Fi, Mystery/Suspense

Synopsis:

When homicide detective Dexter J. Daley’s testimony helps send his partner away for murder, the consequences—and the media frenzy—aren’t far behind. He soon finds himself sans boyfriend, sans friends, and, after an unpleasant encounter in a parking garage after the trial, he’s lucky he doesn’t find himself sans teeth. Dex fears he’ll get transferred from the Human Police Force’s Sixth Precinct, or worse, get dismissed. Instead, his adoptive father—a sergeant at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron otherwise known as the THIRDS—pulls a few strings, and Dex gets recruited as a Defense Agent.

Dex is determined to get his life back on track and eager to get started in his new job. But his first meeting with Team Leader Sloane Brodie, who also happens to be his new jaguar Therian partner, turns disastrous. When the team is called to investigate the murders of three HumaniTherian activists, it soon becomes clear to Dex that getting his partner and the rest of the tightknit team to accept him will be a lot harder than catching the killer—and every bit as dangerous.

goodreads-badge-add-plus-fad3b68d35050280ea55d50f17c654b5

My Review: 5/5 Stars

From the moment I started reading this book, I fell in love with Dex. Even though he did the right thing, people still hated him for it, he never let that take the smile from his face. Oh and let’s not forget his love for cheesy doodles that almost got his head snapped off. When he joined the THIRDS team Destructive Delta’s (awesome name) he didn’t let the unwanted vibes put him off from making the team whole again.

When Sloane came into play, I knew that it was going to be a fun ride for him and Dex because Dex wouldn’t let him push him away. I felt the emotions come off of the page for Sloane’s deceased’s partner and understood why he acted the way he did.

Fighting their attraction for each other, they fought to find the person killing innocent people. Mix in Dex’s smart wit and easy comeback with Sloane’s brooding image, you get one epic relationship.

The book was well written, all of the characters flowed well together and I couldn’t put the book down until I was done with it. Can’t wait to read the next one.
